Today's question: What are your favorite subjects or lessons to teach?
I love teaching almost any subject except Science (it just doesn't come naturally to me...) but, of course, READING is my favorite! There is seriously no way to put into the words the amazing feeling you get when you finally are able to match a reluctant reader with the right book. That moment can be life changing for kids and is so essential for creating life-long readers. My favorite lessons to teach are probably the elements of fiction when I use the Wizard of Oz. You have to understand, I was so not into the Wizard of Oz as a child--it terrified me. But when I saw my mentor teacher (during student teaching) use this piece of literature to teach all the elements of fiction, I was hooked. Now my classroom is home to at least 15 different versions of the book. I wrote blog post on how I use the book earlier this year...find it here! My kids love this lesson (or lessons) and it really sticks with them...plus (BONUS!!) when kids are spacing out and looking at my "toys" they are actually forced to remember why I have so many Wizard of Oz things in my room. :) That, is what I call a WIN-WIN!

I would love to see pictures of your classroom with all your toys. "Forcing" kids to be thinking when they're spacing out is awesome. BTW, I thought the Wizard of Oz was scary when I was a kid, too.
ReplyDeleteSue, I will definitely be sharing pics of my classroom when I can get back in it! I have a few new toys to add :) and I don't think I've ever taken pics of just my Wizard of Oz stuff!
ReplyDeleteI love that it is everywhere in your room. I am a math teacher, but I have Harry Potter stuff all over my room. All my students know I love the books and it starts many conversations! My favorite is a former student on the Aspergers/Autism spectrum who also loved Harry Potter and would take every opportunity to quiz me on Harry Potter facts. He would always try to stump me! :)
ReplyDeleteI love that you use The Wizard of OZ!! Even in kindergarten I have a download that helps students understand retelling and It's based on The Wizard of Oz. If I find it I'll send you the link!
